End of September

Eli is really excited for Halloween. He wanted to decorate the house so I let him have at it. It’s fun to see where he puts things.

He lined up the front of my office with pumpkins and scarecrows. 🙂

I’m teaching Eli how to play the piano. Not sure what this is, but he is practicing. He is such a funny kid.

This is what Eli reminds me of 🙂

Not sure how this happened, but it was just the two of us this evening. Not even sure where Eli was as this time, ha! But, I’m sure he was fine 🙂 We shared a pumpkin empanada on a curb in the parking lot. This is what our date nights are like. But, I can say it’s a step up from our usual date night at Sam’s Club on sample night 🙂

I locked myself out of the house. I don’t know how these things happen either. While waiting for Paul to get home to let me in, I took pictures and sent them to Ferelyn showing her my pumpkin finds for this year. I love it!

I have a little obsession with scarecrows. Two more for my house 🙂

Monday Luncheon

Today’s luncheon we went to my favorite! Summerhays Halibut N’ Chips.

I love fry sauce, and a little fries. The halibut is the best!

For dessert we since we were close to downtown, we went to Brownies, Brownies, Brownies.

Mint brownie, chocolate chip brownie, and butterscotch brownie. I shared all three with Eli and Paul, the but butterscotch wasn’t split equally. 🙂 That one was really good.

Camping at Smith and Morehouse

A short weekend at Smith and Morehouse.

The colors are trying to come out.

This weekend was a school work weekend. Eli needed to gather items for his science project on prairie dogs. He needed to find items and create a habitat for a prairie dog. Can’t think of another excuse to pack up the trailer and head to the mountains.

We had to use the bulldozer to break up the dirt to put it in the box, of course! 🙂

The red leaves are almost here!

We drove up the road to see the salmon run.

Never a dull moment with him 🙂

Showing me the new way of wearing his hat. Mitchell wears it this way, so he said he is going to start wearing it the same way. 🙂 Makes you remember that anyone can be a great example or a horrible warning!

Here they have the Kokanee Salmon.

Tiny little guys! I guess tiny fish for a tiny river?

Several in there, all pointing up stream.

We walked up the river to see how far they have come.

Yup! Trying to catch one.

They came up a long way.

On the way back home, we stopped at Rockport to see how low the lake is.

Pretty low. Pretty scary.

Hike in Butterfield Canyon

I started out the day with a run in the wind and rain with the ducks.

When I got home we decided to go for a short hike. We packed lunch and off we went. Not sure the name of the trail we went on, if it even has a name. We went on the one to the right and then to the right, ha!

It was a wet day. Utah hasn’t seen rain in a while and we loved every rain drop that fell.

This is the first time I have been on this trail. The overlooks were amazing.

We saw a few wild flowers.

New acorns on the oak trees.

This was a perfect day for a little boy to play in EVERY puddle.

This little boy had fun in the rain as well. 🙂

I didn’t have my GPS with us, but I think we went up about a mile. We came to an uphill stream and decided this was a great place to turn around. Crazy enough we were going down hill the majority of the hike, so we had to go home up hill!

Fall leaves are trying to come out.

The clouds started to clear.

By the end of our little 2 mile hike, the sun was trying to come out. This was a perfect hike for a little six year old. Enough rain to keep it cool, short to keep his attention, and enough rocks to climb on. This was a good one.

Hill Air Force Base

My dad had some business on the base so we came with.

On the way in, we saw this huge playground and we had to check it out. Out of all the parks in the valley, this one was the best park. It wasn’t crowded. You can’t get on the base without being military, so we had plenty of park to ourselves.

Another great thing about this park is, it was 100% covered with those triangle canopy covers. Shielded us from the 101′ sun.

They also had these musical instruments to play.

This was the highlight of the park. Something different!

And of course it would’t be an air force base without the fighter jets making their rounds.

Eli LOVED the park. I enjoyed the jets 🙂 He really wants to go back. We will just have to tag along the next time my dad has to go onto the base!

Went for a treat to a fun little shop. Brownies, Brownies, Brownies.

Look at those brownies!

We came home with these two. They were so delicious. We will definitely be back for more!

Monday Luncheon

Today’s lunch is at Buca di Beppo.

We had fun with a lot of laughs as usual.

We split a large platter with a bunch of pastas. Not too impressed. When we left we discussed that the food really wasn’t that good.

Dessert was at Rockwell.

You can’t go wrong with ice cream. This is Eli’s favorite dessert. Give him a choice of anything and ice cream it is.

Skookie with ice cream. Pretty good. Okay, really good.

Extracting Honey

Time to get our tasty honey that the bees have been diligently making all summer.

Before we can remove the honey super, the top box with all the honey, we need to remove all the bees. The bees need to be pushed down and out of the honey super, and gather into the bottom brood box.

Paul took off the top layer and put on a layer with a maze.

When the bees go into the maze, they can only go one way. Down to the brood box. The maze doesn’t allow them back in to travel back up to the honey super.

The bees eating honey on the queen excluder. Paul took the queen excluder off and replaced it with the maze.

Eli hanging out with the cutest and curious miniature horse! He really wanted to know what Paul was doing and why he couldn’t go any further.

A few days later the maze was removed along with the honey super. The box was heavy and the frames were full. Nice, thick, dark honey. The bees did an excellent job this summer!

A tool is used to scrape off the wax caps.

Fresh honey exposed.

We borrowed our neighbors honey extractor.

Put the frames in the extractor.

Close the lid and give it a spin. The honey spins off the comb and onto the sides of the extractor.

Out comes the fresh honey. The honey goes through a fine strainer to the bottom of the bucket. From the bucket, the honey goes into jars.

Tasty honey!
